Both basketball coaches are expecting young players to adapt to new scoring roles

Girls basketball coach Ryan Bowman expects his talented young team to be better this year because he says his team has a winning mentality.

Bowman says that they’re a young but mature team and looking like they have a lot of potential with returning players.

The lone returning senior is Kayla Anderson who averaged 6.7 point per game and 4.8 rebounds per game. Bowman thinks she will be key this year.

“Her aggressive play and experience will be vital this season,” Bowman said.

He described her as a pure outside shooter on a team that “is very guard heavy,” which will give her more of an opportunity to shoot the ball.

Sophomore shooting guard Kelsie Anderson averaged 2.7 points and 3.4 boards per game, and “she can do it all” according to Bowman, who also said “she will give teams many matchup problems this season.”

Junior Alissa Avila is a quick guard for the team who can hit the open three. Bowman also said “she is very crafty with the ball.”

Last season, she averaged 1.2 points and 0.6 rebounds per game.

Bowman says some of the weaknesses the team has are limited depth and staying healthy, but even with injuries and sickness, the younger players are making a big impact and stepping up.

After graduating six seniors last year—two of whom were the leading scorers—these young players have had to step up and take big roles.

Bowman said that this year’s team is going to be exciting and fun to watch, and he encourages the students to come out and watch the girls play.

Boys team looks to spread scoring

Boys’ basketball coach Greg McQueary hopes for a huge improvement from his returning players this season.

This team has many young players taking a big jump from freshman basketball to the varsity level.

The team lost several good shooters and size that the team hasn’t been able to replace. McQueary expects the team will have a different approach to scoring this year.

This season, McQueary said he wants the team to balance scoring by having each player score 6-8 points per game.

One main thing McQueary said they can do to improve is buy into basic fundamentals.

Two of the main weaknesses of the team are taking care of the ball against pressure and defending the shooter. McQueary says that the team is more inconsistent than he anticipated, but he said he sees potential.

Senior Parker Kyle is the leading returning scorer. Last season, Kyle averaged 7.2 points and 4.0 rebounds a game.

One of the younger players that is taking a big step up and making an impact is sophomore Parker Fields who is averaging 10.0 points and 4.8 rebounds a game.McQueary said with his leading returning scorer is out for a while due to injury, some of the younger players are stepping up.

Sophomore Hunter Gross is another young player who stepped up; he is averaging 8.2 points and 1.2 rebounds per game.
