Bowling teams expecting success

Girls looking to win regional crown for seventh year straight

Bowling may not be most talked about sport, but Boone’s  teams have been some of the most successful at the school over the

past few years.

Senior Kara Strong addresses her teammates before their match against Notre Dame on Dec. 13. Strong is one of the state’s top players and will be leading the Rebels in their regional title defense.

The girls bowling team has been very consistent, winning regionals every year for the past six years, and even finishing as runner-up at state once.

Both teams expect to be very competitive this year, even with the boy’s young team, but both teams are also facing challenges: one team is starting with a new coach while the other team is being led mostly by new players.

Angel Miller is the girl’s new coach but she does not think the change will slow them down.

“I am expecting them to finish strong,” Angel Miller said. “They are a top team in the state with top individuals as well and are expected to have a return trip to state.”

Senior Kara Strong, one of the top players in the state, thinks the new coach has already stepped up and made an impact.

“At first, she was not used to the loudness and the format of the bowling matches, but now she is, and she is making the right choices,” Strong said.

“I think we are prepared for facing the rest of the teams we have to,” Strong said. “We need to be more prepared for the post season.”

Miller had nothing but high praise for her older players when asked to describe the team.

“I would describe my team this year as full of leadership,” Miller said. “We have seven seniors most of which have been a part of the team since they were in junior high.”

Miller also thinks that her team can go far in postseason play.

“This team is senior led and very strong,” Miller said. “Right now we are undefeated and want to continue with the winning tradition of this sport.”

The boy’s team is now consisting of mostly first year players but the coach wants to use this opportunity to build the young team.

“I am expecting (the team) to just build confidence in themselves,” Coach Paul Vickers said.

With having mostly first year players in the sport, he just wants the bowlers to learn the fundamentals and take the season in as it goes.

Even though they are at a very early stage with so many young players, Vickers still thinks they can play to their potential.

“We are a young team in a rebuild season with a lot of new up and coming bowlers,” Vickers said. “We have enough talent that we are experienced enough to compete.”
