TikTok Trends of 2019

Michel Arroyo

TikTok is not only a social media platform, but for many people, it is a source of entertainment. Like most other types of entertainment, there are many trends going on within it.

Hashtag Challenges

First off, there’s the many Hashtag Challenges. These form a big part of the TikTok community because of the number of people making videos of themselves doing all sorts of challenges.

With that in mind, two of the most popular challenges are the Haribo challenge and the Fake Travel challenge.

The Haribo Challenge

The Haribo Challenge started with a video posted by TikTok user, David Kasprak, of a bunch of gummy bears imitating a crowd at a concert listening to Adele sing “Someone Like You.”

Soon after the video was uploaded, people began posting videos using different things in place of gummy bears, such as lip balms, pizza slices, and even iPhones.

The Fake Travel Challenge

The Fake Travel Challenge uses a picture of the sky and a white bottle handle to simulate the view from an airplane window.

Some people even took this challenge to the next level by using chairs over their heads, or using car doors to simulate driving.

Celebrity Involvement

Many brands and celebrities are actually the ones to start these challenges for advertisement or to gain more popularity.  For example, Jimmy Fallon did the tumbleweed challenge which essentially is just rolling around on the floor.

Memes

Memes are everywhere in the lives of millenials and Gen Z kids, so it is no surprise that many memes will come out of TikTok.

This may awaken some feelings of rage, or annoyance or even humor.

Here’s the Tea

One trend is the “Here’s the Tea” trend, which all started with a TikTok posted by user Sammie Lewis.

The video featured her tapping on her camera with her nails, while taking a sip of her drink, while yelling about her “tea.”

People made their own variations of the trend and even began mimicking this in real life conversations.

DNA Test

Another meme is the “DNA Test” meme where one would play part of Lizzo’s song “Truth Hurts” and flaunt themselves for the camera. Many people even put their own twists on the trend and changed the lyrics.

Microwave Trend

Then there’s the “Microwave” trend where people will just spin to Joji’s “Slow Dancing in the Dark.” The point of the trend was to create the illusion that the person was in a microwave.

These aren’t all of the TikTok trends out there; some may be some dangerous ones. Always remember that your safety is more important than a viral video.
