The Hot Cocoa Bomb How To

Brianah Harris

Hot cocoa bombs became a trend in 2020 when they first exploded on TikTok and have been popular ever since with 201.2M videos tagged with #HotCocoaBombs.

What are they? The perfect treats for winter.

They are hollow chocolate balls filled with marshmallows and hot cocoa mix. You drop them into a mug of hot milk, and it then turns into a mug of hot chocolate in seconds.

There are lots of recipes, but none are complicated. After looking at quite  a few recipes, I have come up with my own tutorial on how to make hot cocoa bombs at home.

Step 1

Gather ingredients. You will need the following:

  • hot cocoa mix
  • mini marshmallows
  • 2 inch diameter chocolate bomb silicone molds
  • melting chocolate bars or chips
  • sprinkles
  • a piping bag with icing (optional for decoration)

Step 2

Melt the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl at 15 second intervals until smooth. Mix the chocolate in between intervals and make sure not to overheat it.

Step 3

Add the chocolate to each pocket of the hot chocolate mold and spread it in an even layer, but make sure the layer is not too thin.

Step 4

Place the mold in the freezer for 10 minutes or until the chocolate has set.

Once the chocolate is set, remove the molds from the freezer and set half of the spheres to the side. They will be used later as the tops.

Step 5

Now using the bottom halves, add hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows  to each one. You can add chocolate chips or sprinkles as well.

Step 6

Seal the hot cocoa bombs. Take a small microwave safe plate and set it in the microwave for 45 seconds.

Then place the top halves of the spheres on the plate for a couple seconds until the edges melt. Next, connect them to the bottom half and place them in the fridge for minutes until set.

If you want, you can use the piping bag to drizzle rows of icing across the tops.

When you want a hot cocoa, add the hot coca bomb to a hot cup of milk or water, let it melt, and then stir and enjoy!
