New principal, new renovations greet students for new year

Two of the biggest changes that students may notice as they return to school is a new first-year head principal and a new phase of the construction.
Stacey Black was named principal in June, and says that renovations have been a major focus during her first few months on the job and that the construction does create some challenges but it is “very exciting.”
Black explained that the renovations are going to make Boone look like a brand new school and provide a new learning environment for students.
Still, she says it has been challenging.
The growth of the building has required changes to some procedures. Black explained that there are now more hallways to supervise in addition to what she said she “loving calls” the cottages.
The cottages are temporary outdoor classrooms holding the teachers and students displaced by the renovation of one hallway.
Despite these challenges, Black explained that her biggest priority is to make sure that all feel safe and welcome in the building, and she believes the renovations will help with that.
Black started her career at Boone 25 years ago in the special education department, and switched to become an English teacher the following school year and continued on that path for 20 years.
She then became the instructional coach for teachers and provided resources and helped them with their job.
After that, she became an assistant principal for 3 years.
Now, Black is in the top spot and has full responsibility, and she said, “I’m excited to work with staff and the students to make (Boone) the best place it can be.”
Black feels that the student body needs to connect more with each other and show more respect and pride for Boone. Though she says the school is great, she believes that there are many more opportunities for improvement.
As Black looked back on her career and where it has led her, she said she has been energized.
“I have always enjoyed what I have been doing,” Black said. “I have never questioned my career path. I have always known that this is what I want to do. And this is probably the most excited I’ve been in my entire career.”
