One big part of the fall for high schools in our district is Homecoming; candidates are elected and there’s a competition to crown a queen and king.
Except for Boone County High School.
Boone is the only high school in the district that does not crown a Homecoming King, but it seems like that might be changing.
Student council sponsor and former student Molly Zieglemeyer says she has had meetings with principal Stacey Black about changing our ways and crowning a king along with a queen in the upcoming years.
Crowning a king would allow for more leaders to be recognized, increase attendance, and cause more excitement around Homecoming.
Boone needs to honor the senior leaders of the school, not only on the female side, but also on the male side too.
It’s not just students from sports teams being nominated either.
Clubs around the school such as FBLA, NAHS, and Forensics can also nominate people and recognize leaders from clubs that don’t normally get as much recognition.
Being a candidate for Homecoming isn’t just about who gets crowned.
It’s the whole exciting competition, and it gives the candidates the experience of being selected, getting interviewed, riding in the parade, walking across the field and building memories.
Crowning a king would involve more people in the Homecoming process by doubling candidates and adding a whole other exciting competition.
Having a Homecoming King would increase the student attendance of the Homecoming game and dance. More people would show up to cheer on their friends and support whoever the winner of the king and queen are.
Throughout the years, Boone has never crowned a king, even all the way back in 1954 when the school was built.
No one has a good reason to not crown a king.
However, some may say it’s tradition to not have a king since there has never been a history of a king being crowned.
Tradition is important because it provides a sense of stability, but equality is just as important.
Boone is the oldest school in the district and also the only one without a Homecoming King. It’s not fair to only acknowledge the female leaders of Boone when there are just as many male who deserve to be recognized.
Boone needs to take a step out of the past and join Conner, Ryle, and Cooper in the present.
By the way things are looking, it seems like there is a good chance for Homecoming Kings in Boone’s future, and there should be.
Give the students what they want.
Give the students a king.
