It seems like Stanley Cups are everywhere nowadays, but do you know where they are prohibited?
In the possession of Boone County High School students.
Boone has a rule in place that restricts access to these cups, as well as any cup or bottle that is not clear and filled with only water.
The rule is controversial with students, with many strongly disliking the rule.
Junior Ella Phillips called the rule “dumb” and expressed a preference for chilled beverages.
“(Clear water bottles are) not insulated, which causes drinks to not be cold,” Phillips said.
It is true, plastic water bottles aren’t as efficient as metal ones when it comes to keeping drinks cool for long periods of time.
According to the administration, the issue isn’t the fact that the drinks are warm or cool, it’s the ambiguity of what could be in the container.
“(Steel cups/Non clear containers) are not compliant with the school policy, even if they are only filled with water,” said Assistant Principal Micheal Neuhaus.
Neuhaus also explained why students can only have water instead of other, flavored drinks.
“It creates cleanliness issues, with the sugar and color staining,” Neuhaus said.
Nearly all students interviewed stated that concerns about cleanliness were not a good enough reason for the policy.
Some students say they believe the reason that there is a policy in place is because of students bringing alcoholic beverages into the school in metallic or opaque drink containers, but Neuhaus said that there has been no record for a long period of time of any students being disciplined for alcoholic drinks in school.
The same students also brought up some inconsistencies about the rule, primarily about translucent, colored containers. These containers are not compliant with the policy, according to Principal Stacey Black.
Senior Aidan Marshall has brought up a possible exception.
“Some students need to bring in drinks other than water for health issues, whether it be for low vitamins or low sugar,” Marshall said.
The rebuttal is that students with health issues can be given a doctors note in order to be allowed to bring drinks other than water.
Students also bring up the fact that teachers are allowed to have these opaque containers, some of which are not filled with water. Some believe that this isn’t fair to students.
“Teachers and students have different rules,” Neuhaus said.
The water bottle policy is a pain point for some students at Boone, but Neuhaus stated that the policy could be revised in the future.
Until that day comes, students will most likely just have to deal with bringing compliant containers to school, even if they don’t like it.
