Ever crave a donut in the morning? Well “donut” stress, for we have a solution for you.
The Rebellion staff taste-tested three local bakeries (serving donuts) and tried each of their glazed donuts.
OakBrook Bakery
Voted most Fluffy, Tasty, and flakey – 5/5 Stars
OakBrook Bakery, 7500 Oakbrook Dr, Florence, KY 41042 (13 minutes from Boone)
Go to OakBrook Bakery, voted best donut place by the Rebellion staff during our local donut taste-testing. The staff enjoyed the “pillow-like” and airy texture the donut presented.
While they all enjoy a nice traditional glazed donut, the staff commented on the unique taste of OakBrook Bakery’s donut. One student described it to have a “strawberry-like taste” while another described it as a “Hawaiian bread-like taste.”
The flakiness of the glaze also set it apart from the other bakery’s donuts because the staff enjoyed that rather than a more sticky glaze.
Another student pointed out that they admired how the OakBrook Bakery was the only option that only has one store front.
So, don’t walk, run to OakBrook Bakery for whenever you crave first place donut with “lots of flavor.”
Emerson’s Bakery
Voted most Traditional, Sweet, and Simple – 4/5 Stars
Emerson’s Bakery, 8459 U.S. Hwy 42, Florence, KY 41042 (8 minutes from Boone)
With the more “original” glazed donut, Emerson’s Bakery was a close second for the Rebellion staff.
The Rebellion staff enjoyed the “powdered sugar-like” taste that went well with the “yeast” taste. But it was almost too “traditional” in comparison to the donuts at OakBrook Bakery.
There were a couple differences in opinion among the staff while talking about the texture.
One student described them as “soft and light” whereas another student said the donuts were “dry and tough.”
Another difference in opinions was on the sugary taste.
One student said that the donuts were “very sugary” while another student said they were “not too sweet.”
Even though the donuts at Emerson’s Bakery was not the Rebellion’s top contender, they are definitely a great choice for someone looking for a traditional donut.
Peace, Love, and Little Donuts
Voted most Dense, Unique, and cakey – 3/5 Stars
Peace, Love and Little Donuts of Florence, 8640 Haines Dr, Florence, KY 41042 (13 minutes from Boone)
Don’t be fooled by Peace, Love, and Little Donuts being in last place, because the Rebellion staff did enjoy these as well.
The mini cake donuts were more “dense” than the others, because of the difference of batters. The class agreed that the glaze was more “sticky” than the flaky glaze of the OakBrook Bakery Donuts.
The donuts also had a “cakey” flavor that contrasted from the other donuts that were tested.
Another staff member mentioned how they enjoyed the cake donut more than the Emerson’s donut, because it was different, while the Emerson’s donut was traditional like a store bought donut.
The store made the donuts to order, but the staff ate them hours later. The members agreed that the donuts would be better if eaten hot.
While Peace, Love, and Little Donuts may not have been the first place donut, the cake donuts are perfect for someone who doesn’t like the traditional yeast donut.
