The members of the growing FBLA team had major success at the end-of-year competitions this spring.
Even through the challenges they faced this year–like transportation and overlapping with other activities–they were still able to compete at regionals and win 16 trophies.
After regionals, they went to state and had five people place in their events with four moving on to the national competition.
FBLA stands for Future Business Leaders of America. The club helps high school students prepare for careers in business through academic competitions, leadership development, and educational programs.
This club is not only preparing the team members for competing in their event, but also sharpening public speaking and other business skills that they can use beyond high school.
“I’ve learned a lot about how to present myself and my work, as well as how to prepare for those situations,” junior Charlotte Cunningham said.
Business teacher and FBLA adviser Kristin Morvik sees potential in FBLA competitions helping her students figure out their future careers.
“I hope the events are going to inspire them to go into business after high school,” Morvik stated.
Senior Zack Ali, the vice president of FBLA, has found the experience helpful.
“FBLA has really equipped me with skills that I would need if I were to want a successful future in business,” he said.
Leading up to the competitions, the people competing will prepare almost everyday to get ready. They will study their event on their own time and with friends.
The goals that Morvik set moving forward are to keep the team growing, and maintain 60 or more kids.
Over spring break, the team competed at the state leadership conference in Louisville. That competition is the determining factor of who goes to nationals in Orlando on June 29 through July 2.
FBLA isn’t always about studying for and competing in events; it’s also about making new friends and creating new opportunities.
“Traveling, meeting new people and making fun memories with my teammates are some of my favorite things about joining the team.” senior Rahma Muhamed said.
Over the past few years, the team has grown to more than 60 kids, and Boone’s team even won an award for “most chapter increase.”
