Where there’s a pulse there’s a heartbeat, and Cincinnati’s musical heart is having palpitations. Thanks to venues like “DSGN CLLCTV,” “Madison Theatre” and “The Comet” the local underground music scene is more accessible than ever.
At its core, the underground music scene is a realm of artistic independence, a place where musicians are driven by passion rather than commercial success. It’s a space where creativity flourishes without the constraints of mainstream expectations.
From shoegaze to experimental noise, from lo-fi indie pop to avant-garde electronic, there’s a scene for every niche interest. These scenes give rise to dedicated fan bases that appreciate the unique qualities of these genres, fostering a sense of community among those who share a particular musical passion.
Punk rock has been one of those genres that has always thrived in the underground, using their core values of authenticity, rebellion and social commentary. In an America where political activism is seen more as a civic duty than a constitutional right, bands like DOGWATER have found a way to make their voice heard through the megaphone that is music.Cincinnati band DOGWATER makes music for the little guy. They’ve spent their career being loud and proud about their beliefs and getting people involved in the scene.
“We ultimately want our music to inspire change and inspire people to organize: start your own band, join different organizations, go to protests, form groups to protect those who are under attack,” said the lead singer, Sage, in an interview conducted over Instagram. “All we have is each other.”
Their music conveys deep, passionate messages about standing up against the oppressor and inspiring the people who need inspiration. Their direct action has empowered the community, sparking more political discussion and others to speak on the things that they care about.
“We’re planning more shows, making more homies in the scene, and screaming about all the things we care about. Now is the time to put your money where your mouth is and BE LOUD and INVOLVED.”
DOGWATER’s shows are as enthralling and energetic as all should be. They don’t reinvent the wheel, but they don’t have to; their raw energy and conviction is enough to turn a good show into a memorable one.
Usually they like to credit the crowd for the unforgettable experience.
“The crowd is what makes a performance exciting. We love to see people moving and grooving, really getting down with our sound and expressing themselves.”
DOGWATER have shown support to other impressive music acts within the underground. They also stress the importance of getting into the scene and supporting small acts.
“Cincinnati’s music scene is vast and diverse—there’s a little bit of everything,” Sage said. “Whether you are in a band or constantly going to shows and supporting the scene, you play a crucial and important role in sustaining the DIY culture here in Cincinnati.”
Cincinnati’s punk and hardcore is on the move, and it is up to you to catch up.
