When people think of track, people typically think of running countless laps, and intense practices. For me it’s been a lot more than that, and it has brought in more positive experiences.
Track is a wonderful way to make new connections, friends, and stay in shape throughout the school year.
With my time on the team, I was able to create friendships and bonds that are not only within my own school but throughout other local schools as well.
Whether it’s bonding over the intense workouts from the coach or lining up for a race with anticipation and excitement, there is always someone to offer support.
While being on the team, I have seen a lot of positivity from all of the coaches and teammates from our school and schools in the area. People are always cheering for every single event and person running around the track regardless of the times or positions.
I would consider track as one of the most welcoming and inclusive sports in high school.
Events range from a 100 meter dash to something as long as a 3200 meter run. Hurdles are also an amazing option for you if you want a little more of a challenge.
Additionally, you are able to run in different types of relays. You will be with three other people working together to get a team personal best, and all running the same distance.
Track relay events also range from sprinting to distance with the 4×100,4×200 ,4×400 and 4×800. Each athlete on those relays will run either a 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 400 meter dash or the 800 meter run.
If running is not your thing, there are other opportunities for you as well, like long jump and high jump. It requires precise technique to get over the high jump pole as high as you can or into the sand pit as far as you can.
For some, shot-put and disc is more their jam. For shot-put, girls will take an 8.8 pound ball and guys will have a 12 pound ball and throw it as far as you can.
Track and field will always have a spot for anyone who is willing to work hard, and put their time and dedication into the sport.
Even though you might be worried about your ability to participate in these events, we have great coaches that will help reach your full potential.
Track and field will allow you to stay in shape throughout the whole school year, whether it’s training for another sport, or just wanting to be more competitive. You are able to join the track team and work with the coaches and teammates to have running workouts everyday, and competitions 2-3 times a week.
And yes, running and practices are hard, but if you want to add another varsity letter to your letterman’s jacket or get considered for the triple threat award with an additional free jacket, track is a great opportunity for you to consider.
If you are interested in joining the team for next upcoming seasons contact girls head coach Cliff Riley, or boys head coach Brain Soules.
