Powderpuff has been a tradition for many schools for a long time. The excitement, loud noises, victories and losses, and the collaboration are what makes it Powderpuff.
Now it’s time that Boone brings back Powderpuff games.
Powderpuff is a sport of flag football in which only female players participate. Not only are there females participating in the game, the males get to dress up as cheerleaders and cheer on the females as if the roles switched.
Football coaches also play as the referees which adds another element of fun to the game. Powderpuff is not an every week sport; it’s more like a tradition held annually for specific events or dates.
Boone hasn’t had a Powderpuff game in four years since 2021.
The cheer program tried to promote another game in 2022, but there were not enough participants for the game to begin.
Football players can also get the chance to cheer on the girls that are playing and get a feeling of cheering for their own team.
The head coach of the cheerleading team, Katrina Lawson, was the host of the game in 2021 and stated the kids had an “amazing time.”
The students get to see their close friends and watch each other play in a game that some haven’t played before.
Roles being switched and seeing others in different positions makes it fun for everyone.
“There was so much competition and wanting to be the ‘best class’ since we had the classes playing against each other,” Lawson said.
Students will make new friends, use time productively, and learn how to work together as a team to win.
Powderpuff will be good for the teachers, allowing them to have the coaching experience of being in a game if they didn’t have the opportunity as a student or athlete.
The fun ridiculousness will stand out for Boone’s school and act as a tradition to gather people for an enjoyable productive time.
The Powderpuff games would be scheduled for important events such as homecoming and prom.
Promoting games on special events will help bring more participants to the event, and those participants will spread the word that they are involved.
This would help Boone’s participation in different activities and sports throughout the years and help students engage with others in the future.
“I would love for the Powderpuff game to come back, as I think it’s another way for kids to get involved and be a part of something special,” Lawson said.
Now it’s time to bring it back!
